ACANTHUS

A plant common in the Mediterranean area, which has deeply cut,large and shiny leaves.It was adopted by the Greeks as a decorative motif and its use in this role spread westwards as the centuries advanced.

A pear-shaped form,slender above and bulging below,which owes its name to its connection with the balustrade or baluster.The latter now corrupted to "banister"
